Austria’s long‑anticipated digital E‑Card has officially arrived. After several announcements in recent years, citizens can now store and use their national health insurance card directly on their smartphones. The feature is available immediately through social insurance apps such as Meine SV and Meine ÖGK, both offered for Android and iOS.
A Simple Setup Through ID Austria
Users who open the Meine SV app will now find the option to activate the digital E‑Card prominently displayed under the “Overview” section. To enable it, identity verification via ID Austria is required. For anyone who already has the ID Austria app installed and configured on their phone, the process takes only a few minutes.
How the Digital E‑Card Works
The rollout has been relatively quiet. One of the few early mentions came from the Lower Austrian Medical Association, which noted on its website that the digital card became operational on April 8.
Functionally, the digital E‑Card works just like the physical version. In doctors’ offices and pharmacies, it can be used with the standard GINO card readers. Medical staff receive the same level of access to a patient’s health data as they would with the plastic card.
Using the digital version resembles contactless payment:
- Open the relevant app (e.g., Meine SV)
- Select “Digital E‑Card”
- Tap “Use”
- Hold the smartphone close to the GINO reader until all three LED lights turn green
According to official instructions, the phone must be held steadily near the “GINO” label on the device for successful authentication.
Internet Connection Required
One important limitation: the digital E‑Card only works with an active internet connection. If the phone is offline, neither the app nor the card can be used. This may pose challenges in medical practices or pharmacies with poor mobile reception, so users are advised to keep this in mind.
Data Protection Measures
Authorities emphasize that the digital E‑Card offers the same level of data protection as the physical card. It acts solely as a key to access health information. No personal medical data is stored on the digital card itself, nor is any such data transmitted during use.
